Girls have gamed for a long time. More girls game now, because they don't have to try to play while trying not to get creeped out by being leered at over the DM's screen by some 32 year old guy still living at home with Mom, and wearing some smelly costume bits he picked up from the last gaming convention. This description, while not meant to insult male gamers at large, is an accurate description of the DM at the last live Dungeons and Dragons game I attempted to play while in University. For some unknown reason, my Paladin had a sudden and unresistable urge to fight orcs on the other side of the continent and left the party abruptly.
What i'm wondering about is how the stats were built ? Survey of stores or accounts or whatever, Stats made by Blizzard, ... ? I can imagine a number of mothers having the account or buying cards for their children.(Not that i'm trying to minimize it, actually i'd think the fathers would be the ones doing that most, but i'm wondering)Reading the methodology thing, it seems to be based on a PC program tracking usage, not much information on how they identify who's actually playing behind that (login, the user has to select a profile, ... ?).
That's not surprising.15~20 years ago video games were mostly played by teenagers and young adults males (the interesting question is : why?), now they're democratizing. There's more women playing, but also more aged people, more children, more casual gamers etc. Video games used to be a brand new and kinda underground hobby, with time they're becoming a simple hobby like the others (even if there's still stupid shows on TV saying "OMG video games drive your children crazy, it'll kill them all if they don't kill you first!"). And the fact that WoW has the most girls customers is logical : it's one of the most popular game, popularity and tons of advertising > tons of people who'll start video games with this one. Someone said in the first page something like "women are building themselves the stereotype that girls don't play". Well, actually, no. Of course there's nearly as much girls playing now than guys, but it hasn't always been like that. There's always been girls playing but far less than nowadays. (I've typed a bunch of text about the role ads play in this and why it has changed but deleted it, don't want to crit the face of the wowhead community with a boring wall of text haha). On a funnier note, i've found this two sentences pretty amusing when put together, thinking that they come from a girl :
True story: I learned to curse by tape recording my mother playing Pac Man on our Atari 2600.
dunno if Girls dont game but surely "Girl's" dont...anw, nice link, was thinking like 20% of gamers being females tbh..
Female Night Elf named "Enchantryss", naked and dancing on a mailbox? GuyFemale Orc named "Bloodspatter", hugging your corpse? Girl
ok i cant believe anyone is shocked at the fact that girls play wow or any game in that matter. ive meet quite a few that play wow. but most hide the fact there girls cause some people sterotype them that they cant play. ...total off note but just cause i play as a girl on wow doesnt mean i am one. and vice versa.
A decent part of my guild is made up of females. Not only are they good players..but they are the most guild loyal too. As GM the one thing I learned about them is that socializing is a big part of the reason why they play. Most of the males are dedicated wowheads..but most of the women tend to enjoy a side dish of real life conversation to go along with their Naxx run. In my guild at least they are a pleasure to have.
